Another fashionable illustration that I did for the new website of Moodies, a company I work for on a regular basis.
They only knew me for my caricatures and were very surprised to find out I did this kind of work too.
Well, what can I say. With assignments like these it's good to discover that 4 years at the Arnhem Fashion Institute were not waisted after all...
Well, that's not fair. It's a very good school, it's just that when I finished it I knew I wanted to be an illustrator.

Great Illustrators

These are three illustrators that really blow me away. I found them surfing on the internet. They're all three french, or of french origin, and it shows. Very elegant lines, witty and fashionable characters, and a european atmosphere, perhaps because of the buildings in the background.

Last week I had a digital gig. It's always very exciting, everything has to work, the cartridge mustn't be empty etc.etc. But it was fun too. People are always very surprised to see a caricature being made on a cintiq. A large number of caricatures is always very hard to make, but it's more about demonstrating what is possible on a computer than making quantities is my experience.

a sith

I recently joined a new forum: toonweekly.com, which concentrates on cartoons. A new and interesting angle for me. I hope to learn a lot from it.
There's a contest every week and this week's subject was:
create a "sith."
A what? My first learning experience. So this was my entry, I'm so used to drawing cute animals, they have to give me some time letting that go....

Britney Spears

I did this one in Painter Classic with the pastel chalk brush.
It's a nice technique, not as hard as the scratchboard tool which I normally use.

Greeting Cards

I love receiving (and sending) greeting cards. The thought that someone did his/her best to pick out the right card for you in a shop, wrote down a message, put down your address on the envelope, licked the stamp and walked all the way to the post office, just to send you a sweet and private message.... This will never be replaced by e-cards in my opinion.
These are a few "jumbo cards' that I designed for Hallmark. These sure are fun to give away!

More sketches

I did these a while ago.
When I try to clean them up, I find there is something missing that was there in the sketch, something vibrant. Especially the one of Harry Dean Stanton. Clean ups don't work for me lately.
So instead I post these 4 minute sketches.

I did some quick sketches in front of the television yesterday evening, 5 to 10 minutes. We were switching from "As good as it gets" to "The talented mr. Ripley". I definitely liked the last one better, but we decided to stick to the first one.
How come Jack Nicholson always gets younger women, even if he's a grumpy old man?
I thought the woman who played Helen Hunts mother was much sweeter, softer, feminine than Helen.

Dressed for work

There are times when you are working hard to promote yourself as an artist and there are times when you want to draw and study as much as you can and you seem to forget that there's a world outside, a world that constantly has to be made conscious that you are alive and kicking.
This is what Hugo and I found out when we saw this photo.
It was taken 8 years ago. We had decided to introduce an act as a golden age couple (The dutch called the 17th century their golden age, because they were doing pretty well, economically, politically ánd culturally), and had these clothes made for historic/medieval parties.
But we didn't do much promotion at the time, and we also found out that Hugo's pants were too tight, that he didn't feel comfortable wearing tights underneath and that I had an itchy feeling wearing that cap.
But looking at the photo again I find that we are a very cute couple, and the clothes are very original too, so we are planning to give it another try.
