Cold mountain

I did this cartoon a few weeks ago for toonweekly's weekly contest. The theme was: country & western. Cold mountain isn't a real western, but I just wanted to draw Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger.

medieval party

A few weeks ago I told about our 'golden age' costumes and how seldom we have to work wearing them. Well, last friday it was finally the day! I'm not too eager doing gigs like these, because sometimes you end up in a place or environment where these costumes are so out of tune. But this was not the case last friday, because the people that hired us had all made a great effort in creating the right atmosphere by wearing medieval clothes themselves. There were beggars, monks, kings and queens, the lights were dimmed and the beer was flooding.

There was this lady who made this beautiful photo of me at work.

And in return I made her a caricature.

It was a pity that Hugo was working in the darker areas, otherwise I would have made a similar photo of him. Well, at least you can see his famous leds now!

Park Zypendaal

Only 100 metres from our house lies Park Zypendaal, a beautiful 'english style' national park.
Perfect for a short stroll after a days hard work, or even after a day of no work at all.

Live caricatures

Looking at what I posted the last few months it seems I didn't have many live gigs. Which isn't true. So I'll post some examples of what I have been doing lately.

The theme of this evening was (very obvious) pirates. Some of the people had beautiful costumes, and it frustrated me that it was so dark and crowded that I couldn't concentrate 100 % on the job. So I went home with a slightly dissatisfied feeling.
But now, looking back at the pictures, I think they're not bad. And it's always good to post them, gives you the opportunity to look at them from a distance.

She wants to be a fashion designer.

I like the simplicity of this one.

another illustration

I did this illustration about a year ago, it's a greeting card, and belongs to a series of 6. This was the best one. It shows perfectly my greatest weakness (or strength): I'm very graphic, but I'm not very good doing perspective. To be honest, I hate it. It never comes out right.
I don't like doing cars, buildings, technical equipment, or it has to be in a very simple way. Like a simple skyline, or a Fred Flintsone car.

Here are a few of my favourite all time illustrators, and you can see they suffer from the same 'disease'.

ABBA

This weeks challenge of toonweekly.com (or actually it was the week before) was to create a person or band involved into music.
I had a sketch of ABBA lying on the floor of my studio for a very long time, and this was a good reason to finally finish it.
The first album I ever bought was "Arrival" and I still feel happy when I hear these innocent songs and lyrics.

Group caricature

One of the most difficult assignments, and I think many fellow artists agree with me, is a group caricature. Not only do you have to make each individual slightly exaggerated but still with a likeness, you also have to make a nice and strong composition. This combination is sooooo difficult!

A few weeks ago however I had another digital gig, and the client and I agreed I would make a group caricature of the people I had drawn that afternoon. Which proved to be the solution for me.
The caricatures all were approved that afternoon, which is a worry less, and then at home I simply had to select them, import them into Photoshop and move them around a little bit to see which faces work well together. I sometimes added a shoulder, collar or tie, and ended up with this.....
The result is far more lively than any other group caricature I had done before.
There are still things that I'm not satisfied with, but in the next group caricature I will solve that out.
